A skeleton wearing a fur costume. A body that has seemingly given everything and received nothing in return. Another innocent life nearly lost to human neglect.
A photograph came across our phones that immediately made our hearts sink. A female dog had been found tied up and abandoned in Weehawken, New Jersey. What we saw was devastating. A desperately emaciated body, bones protruding beneath her skin, and a face that told a heartbreaking story of suffering.
We named her Sabrina.
At just 24–25 pounds, Sabrina is little more than skin stretched over a skeleton. Every rib. Every vertebra. Every sharp angle of her fragile frame is painfully visible. Her skull has absolutely no muscle tone remaining, leaving a pointed ridge so sharp that it actually hurts your hand to gently pet her. Her nails are stained yellow, and her body shows the unmistakable signs of profound physical deterioration.
We can only imagine how uncomfortable it must be for Sabrina to simply exist in her own skin.
And yet, somehow, this sweet girl still wants to love.
Despite everything she has endured, Sabrina desperately seeks human affection. She wants to be touched, reassured, and accepted. She approaches with a sweetness that is almost impossible to comprehend, considering how terribly humans have failed her.
She is constantly searching for food. Her hunger is heartbreaking. Her weakness is frightening.
She tries to walk, but her body struggles to support her. She stumbles, trips, and topples over. Watching her desperately attempt to remain standing, while still seeking affection, is something that will stay with us for a very long time.
We truly believe that one more day could have meant the difference between life and death.
And that realization brought back memories we have never been able to erase.
Spaghetti. Meatball. Ravioli.
The names of dogs whose devastating conditions left permanent scars on our hearts. Dogs who suffered unimaginable neglect. Dogs whose protruding bones and hollow bodies became haunting reminders of what happens when the most basic necessities of life are withheld.
We never really got over those cases. We never will.
We don't yet know everything about Sabrina's medical condition or what her diagnostic testing will reveal. We cannot say with certainty what caused her extreme weight loss. But we know she was abandoned in a condition no living creature should ever have to endure.
Sometimes
there is no mysterious disease behind such suffering. Sometimes the greatest threat to an animal's life is the very human being responsible for protecting it.
Maybe human cruelty, neglect, and indifference are the real malignancy.
Sabrina's body also bears the signs of repeated breeding. We cannot know how many litters she has carried or what her life looked like before she was discarded. But looking at her now, one heartbreaking description comes to mind:
OVERBRED. UNDERLOVED. AND ULTIMATELY ABANDONED.
How does a dog reach this condition without someone noticing? How does a living, breathing creature become so desperately thin that she can barely stand? How does someone tie her up and simply walk away?
These are questions we may never have answers to.
But there is one thing we know with certainty.
Thanks to the rescue efforts of Near & Far Animal Foundation and Pitbulls & Addicts, Sabrina has been given the chance she so desperately deserves.
She has been admitted to the hospital, where veterinarians are conducting diagnostic testing and evaluating her critical condition. Her recovery will require careful medical supervision, nutritional support, patience, and time. After such severe emaciation, even the process of restoring her strength must be handled with tremendous care.
We don't know what lies ahead medically. We don't know how long her recovery will take or what additional complications may be discovered.
But we do know that Sabrina will never have to face this fight alone again.
We will fight alongside her. We will do everything within our power to give her the medical care, nourishment, security, and love that she has been denied.
We want Sabrina to experience a life where she never has to search desperately for her next meal. Where her legs are strong enough to run. Where a gentle hand against her body brings comfort instead of pain. Where she can finally rest without fear.
A life where she is not simply surviving.
A life where she is LIVING.
We need to share something else, something that is difficult to put into words.
The load we carry is heavy. The anger is real. The tears never seem to stop.
We are still fighting for other critically ill and injured animals. We are still carrying the emotional scars of those we couldn't save. Our veterinary expenses continue to grow, and our resources are stretched beyond what we ever imagined.
Every new photograph, every desperate call, every innocent animal found suffering brings with it another emotional and financial responsibility.
There are days when the heartbreak feels unbearable.
But then we look into Sabrina's eyes.
We see a dog who has every reason to fear people, yet still reaches for affection. A dog whose body is nearly depleted, yet whose spirit continues to fight.
And we know why we cannot give up.
Please pray for Sabrina. And please pray for us, too.
Because we cannot continue saving animals like Sabrina without people who care enough to stand beside us.
Every donation helps us provide critical veterinary care, hospitalization, diagnostic testing, medication, and the support she will need throughout her recovery.
If you cannot donate, please share her story. Help us remind the world that these innocent lives matter.
